Forum Marketing Essential Forum Marketing Tips

Forum marketing is a highly effective yet often underrated method of reaching your customers. Many internet marketers don’t realize exactly how much they can accomplish by interacting with their target market. While it’s true that it can take some time to see results from this type of marketing, the effort is well-worth it because when you do see results, they are usually beyond what you could have hoped for.

Know the Rules

Regardless of what niche the forum is in, you need to be fully aware of the rules. For example, some forums won’t allow you to advertise in your signature until you have a certain number of quality posts. Failure to abide by this rule can get you banned. Others won’t let you have a signature at all until you have proven to be a contributing member. So, if you don’t know the rules, you could end up getting banned, which is the last thing you want. A forum not only allows you to learn more about your target market but it’s also a great way of showcasing your expertise. If you’ve written a book on dog training, people need a reason to buy it.  When you Continue reading »

Three Reasons to Incorporate Forums into Your Overall Marketing Strategy

Forum BenefitsThree Reasons to Incorporate Forums into Your Overall Marketing Strategy

Forum marketing has gained a relatively poor reputation, though it is wholly undeserved. Internet marketers shy away from this marketing channel mainly because it does require an investment of time. To succeed with forum marketing, you need to offer value and even though that should go without saying in any aspect of your online business, many internet marketers prefer other channels that require less involvement.

However, forum marketing offers a wide range of advantages and if you put the time and effort in, you will be glad you did.

Backlinks

Regardless of how many changes Google’s algorithms go through, backlinks will always be important, especially quality ones from relevant, high quality sites. Forums provide you with a great opportunity to build numerous backlinks that will not only affect your site’s ranking in the SERPs but also drive traffic from the forum itself.

If you have any experience with internet marketing, you likely are aware of how hard it is to build quality backlinks. On a forum, you simply need to add your link to your signature and post, which makes forums practically invaluable. Of course, don’t expect to be able to add a link to your signature right away, as most forums require you to be a member for a specific period of time and have a certain number of posts before you can do it. However, you want to become a valuable member of the community in any case before you start advertising your services, as this is a more effective strategy.

Create a Great Forum Marketing Signature

Forum signatureYour forum marketing signature is one of the things that can make or break your campaign. If you don’t have a signature, you won’t be able to drive traffic to your site because regardless of how valuable your posts are, people won’t have any way to reach your site.

So, a good forum signature needs to give people an idea of who you are and what business you’re in, as well as providing them a way of getting in touch with you. Don’t think of it as just a business card, though. It also needs to convince people to visit your website.

What Your Signature Should Have

At the very minimum, you need to include your name, your site URL and a general description of your business. This way people will know who you are, what you do and how to find you. You can take things a step further and offer other contact details, such as an email address and links to your social media profiles.  A quick five point recap:

  1. Name: Obvious, but could be forgotten. You should use your full professional name, no nicknames, unless the nickname is part of your brand.
  2. Site description: A concise sentence or two will help fellow forum members know what you do and who you are.
  3. Web Site URL:  Its best to link from the description of your site to your site itself. For example, link the main key word in your profile to your site. It is more compelling than a link from “My Site”.
  4. Contact Information: I believe you should include your email address, and maybe just a couple select social network links. By the same token, you may want to steer clear of publishing your email address directly. Email harvesting bots can collect your address and begin spam you. You could publish your email address as yourname (at) yourdomain (dot) com. email copyHarvesting programs don’t recognize this as an email address, but your readers do and can use that to contact you directly.
  5. A Professional Photo: Not so formal that you push away readers, but not too casual. Somewhere between the business suit and the swim trunks will be fine. Even if you are participating in a laid back forum, don’t be too casual or readers won’t trust you enough.

Three Things You Should Never Do in Forum Marketing

Forum MarketingThree Things You Should Never Do in Forum Marketing

While forum marketing is a highly effective tool for any small business owner, many internet marketers don’t realize exactly how powerful it is. This is mainly because they don’t understand that it takes time to succeed. It’s not an instant solution, but once you do put the time in, you will end up building powerful relationship that will offer you great results for the long term.

However, like with anything to do with marketing, there are some grievous mistakes you can make that will end your forum marketing attempts before you even begin. So, make sure to avoid the following mistakes to ensure you reap the greatest rewards from forum marketing.

Affiliate Links

You might be tempted to post affiliate links to save time. After all, it’s better to send people straight to the product you are selling, right? This way they won’t waste time on your website. Unfortunately, that’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make. The idea is to build a relationship with the people on the forum rather than selling to them directly.

Thus, you want to avoid posting affiliate links. Use your website to sell to people and keep the forum for relationship building, which means offering value first.

Getting Offended and Being Rude

If you get offended easily, then you are likely to end up being rude to someone. You need to grow a thicker skin because not everyone will love your product or your company. In fact, you can expect a few people to be downright hostile and you might be tempted to let them have it. Unfortunately, no matter how irritated you are, you need to keep your temper under control and be polite. It may be painful. You may want to explode. But you have to stay calm and respond politely. The moment you are rude or offensive in return is the moment you will undo all your good work. Continue reading »
